Your Life and Psalm 48

How often do we consider the God we serve, his worth, his name, his holiness, but fail to understand and justify these things in our own minds. How often do we see the works of God yet ignore the impact his ways have on us? How often do we fail to believe because we do not know?  Let’s let Psalm 48 be our guide:

1 Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2 Beautiful in its loftiness, the joy of the whole earth, like the heights of Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King.
3 God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4 When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together,
5 they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror.
6 Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor.
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind.
8 As we have heard, so we have seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God:
God makes her secure forever.
9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love.
10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers,
13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation.
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

Pslam 48
Verse 1 is an expression of God’s worth, his greatness, his holiness. We can offer a blind AMEN to this expression, but in doing so we would not fully understand the intimate nature of God. Standing alone, verse 1 is shallow and patronizing.
Verse 14 is and expression of personal belief in who God is, his everlasting nature and the way that he approaches his people. He is God forever. He is our God forever. He is leading us no matter what. Standing alone, verse 14 does not indicate that God is capable. It is just pie in the sky thinking for people who need more.
The defense of these two verses exists in verses 2-13:
God is great and worthy of praise(v1)
God is beautiful (v2)
God’s City surpasses the Great city of the world (v2)
God is protector of his city (v3)
God overcomes the world governments (v4)
God is powerful and causes fear to the wicked (v5-7)
God’s reputation proceeds him (v8a)
God is protector of His city (v8b)
God is love (v9)
God is righteous (v10)
God is joy (v11)
God is fair (v11)
God’s evidence surrounds Him (v12-13)
God is faithful (v14)
As you live “your life” be sure to be regularly aware of and increase your understanding in who God is and what he does.  Your life will be better for it.
